Rupert Giles

As a librarian with a past, Giles is Buffy's watcher who is responsible for her training and well being. His father and Grand Mother were also Watchers and when he was 10 his destiny was revealed to him. A disappointed Giles then had to give up his dreams of being a fighter pilot or a Grocer. In fact, he dropped out of Oxford to join an occult group before his gig as a curator at a British Museum. Although there is a Slayer handbook to help instruct the Chosen One, Giles decided to forego what he thought would be an exercise in futility with his all-too-reluctant ward. Just as his stereotypical British stiff demeanour and tweed jacket suggests, Giles is as uncomfortable with the drama of teen angst ( although fiercely protective of any loyal to Buffy ) as he is around those "idiot boxes" with screens that we modern men call computers. He not only is fluent in Latin, but in the Occult as well and maintains a collection of ancies and current tomes unequalled in the west.
