Psyvariar has a rather neat feature called the Buzz system. Buzz earns you masses of points as your ship crazes against spews of bullets from enemies and bosses. The game can be played purely for highest numbers of Buzzes.

Fantastic graphics and decent tunes are all on offer as well as a reasonable difficulty level for lastability.

This has also been released on PS2 with an updated version due to be released on X Box.

The last Dreamcast title ever? Surely not....

CASTLE OF SHIKIGAMI 2 (SHIKIGAMI NO SHIRO 2)

Dreamcast Jap | 2004

Another vertical shooter hits the Dreamcast. Originally released on the Game Cube and PS2 the Dreamcast version boasts the closest conversion to the arcade original and some addition features.

You control an individual flying around on a broom stick from a selection of characters. As you destroy the enemies they fire diamond shaped bullets at you. Buzzing these makes your character tinkle (!).

Some interesting characters to be encountered through out the course of the game with some story going on but it’s in Japanese.

Could this be the last Dreamcast title ever?

CHRISTMAS NiGHTS

Saturn Pal | 1996

Space Harrier is unarguably one of Sega’s most famous games ever. At the time of it’s debut in 1986 the game showcased the Sprite Scaling Technology of Sega’s System 16 Arcade board which was also the platform for other classics such as After Burner and Out Run. The man behind all of these games is Yu Suzuki.

Set in the space year 2567 Space Harrier must save Dragon Land from an army of invading.

The gameplay pretty simple; basically shoot and dodge. You run or fly across the chequred floor shooting down enemies with your laser cannon avioding incoming fire and sometime (even more difficult) evading pilons and trees. At the end of each stage there is a boss to defeat. There are 18 stages in total each with a bizarre name. Playing Space Harrier requires ultrolling and better music. There are about 25 levels taking you from your home bay to the technogical innards of the aliens themselves.
