2001 saw SEGA make the decision to become a multi-platform third party developer. Since then Sonic has gone to several more platforms in various forms. It was the release of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (and it's success) on the Gamecube that paved the way for future endeavours.
The games are on all modern platforms including mobile phones and tablets as they no longer carry a distinction of being entirely 3D or 2D now.
In the earlier multi-platform days, the 3D games were on consoles and the 2D on handhelds.
With many releases since been and more on the way Sonic’s future wherever he's running seems bright as ever!
